Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is compounding?

A: Coumpounding is making dosage forms or strengths of medications that are not commercially available.

Q: Do I need a prescription to have something compounded?

A: Yes, anything that is compounded must have a prescription.

Q: Do I need to see my doctor, or can you get the prescription?

A: If you are interested in using a compounded product or would like to see what the options are, it's easiest if you contact me (Dawn) at Dakota Compounding Pharmacy first. Then I can find out what the problems are and what you would like to use, then I can contact you prescriber to see if it would be OK to try a compounded product.

Q: Are compounded products approved by the FDA?

A: Every drug, base, or excipient used in compounding has been approved for use by the FDA. Every possible combination of medications has not. For example: combining 2-3 medications to treat nail fungus in and of itself has not been evaluated by the FDA. However, neither has using 2-3 different drugs in combination to treat high blood pressure. Medications are combined every day to treat myriad conditions. The main difference is that at Dakota Compounding Pharmacy, we are able to make the medication in a different form or dose and can combine the med into one dosage form.
